Team 4593

We are Rapid Acceleration, FIRST Robotics Competition Team 4593, based in Rapid City, SD. Our team consists of high school students from around the area. Our program was established in August of 2013, with the purpose of giving students the opportunity to participate in a fun Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) oriented project. Each year, the team is tasked with designing, building, programming and testing a 120lb robot to complete an assigned task by the end of a 6-week build season. This is designed to help prepare students for the real world by developing problem solving skills used to complete a challenging objective in a tight time frame. The team takes the robot to a competition in Denver, CO, and competes with other teams from across the world, hoping to qualify for the World Championships.

Our team is an official participant in the international FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC). FIRST gives students the opportunity to build their knowledge and skills by working directly with volunteer mentors from the fields of engineering, programming, business and marketing. Currently there are more than 3800 schools, 75,000 students and 24,000 mentors from around the world that participate in FRC. In South Dakota, we are the only organization that has met the challenge of offering this program. Our main goal is to encourage students to participate in activities that relate to careers in STEM, such as engineering, computer science, CAD, and graphic design, with the hope of growing great future employees. Our approach is to teach life-skills of teamwork, responsibility, personal development and problem solving, instilling values among the young adults in the program. We also encourage students to give back to the community through volunteering and outreach programs such as teaching robotics to elementary students, feeding the hungry and community clean-up. We believe that if you can reach youth at an early age, you can instill life-long values that benefit everyone.

FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) was founded in 1989 to inspire young people's interest and participation in science and technology. Based in Manchester, NH, the 501(c)(3) not-for-profit public charity designs accessible, innovative programs that motivate young people to pursue education and career opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and math, while building self-confidence, knowledge, and life skills.

FIRST is More Than Robots. FIRST participation is proven to encourage students to pursue education and careers in STEM-related fields, inspire them to become leaders and innovators, and enhance their 21 st century work-life skills.
